Nokia 7.1 gets Android Pie three weeks after launch

When a phone launches an older version of Android, it usually takes the company a few months to update the device to the latest OS version of Google. But Nokia is bucking this trend.

Today its Finnish owner HMD Global announced that Nokia 7.1 will receive its Android 9.0 Pie update this week. This comes just over three weeks after its South African launch.

"Nokia 7.1 is our fourth smartphone running Android 9 Pie, alongside Nokia 7 plus, Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 with even more to come by the end of the year," said Juho Sarvikas, HMD's Chief Product Marketing Officer.

"We're proud to be able to ramp up our roll out and offer even more Nokia smartphones users the chance to get a slice of Android 9 Pie that's pure, secure and up to date."

Nokia has an advantage over its rivals though. All of its Android devices belong to the Android One program, which ensures fast, monthly updates to the OS directly from Google.

Gearburn currently has the Nokia 7.1 in for review, so keep tuned for our thoughts and opinion on the device in due course.
