Dog owners on West Randa were immediately encouraged to vaccinate their dogs against the Distemper virus.
The warning comes after SPS Tshwane confirmed that on Saturday, January 23 they are fighting a potentially serious outbreak of Canine Distemper at their Waltloo branch.
According to the official website of Tshwane SPCA [https://spcapta.org.za/] "Scaring is a serious airborne virus that spreads rapidly and is not a cure, Symptoms often take time to manifest, and dogs at first may seem healthy just to worsen later. The first signs of worsening include sneezing, coughing and thick mucous membranes, fever, lethargy, sudden vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite are also common symptoms of the virus. "

Dr. Elizna Boag, Business Unit Manager, Partner and Ethics in Africa, issued a statement earlier this week: "Dog owners should know that because the disease is a viral disease and the animal's immune system has to fight it without help, veterinarians can provide only supportive treatment when the dog is diagnosed as being sick, it is estimated that 50% of adult dogs and 80% of puppies are subject to this disease Vaccination is the only way to prevent the disease.
Lorika Boshoff, chairwoman of Rand West SPCA, added: "This is a very dangerous virus among dogs, and we urge people to take their dogs for vaccination as a precautionary measure. People should take their dogs to their local veterinary clinics because we do not vaccinate. "
The Herald has since talked to Dr. Doret du Plessis of the Veterinary Clinic of Culemborg Park about the virus:
