WASHINGTON, 28 November 2018 / PRNewswire / – NASA Origins Spacecraft, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identity, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) is scheduled to meet the target asteroid Benna Monday, December 3 approximately midday EST.
NASA is broadcasting a live event From 11:45 to 12:15 EST to highlight the arrival of the agency's first asteroid return mission. The program will be based on the OSIRIS-REx control at Lockheed Martin's Kosher facility in Prague Littleton, Colorado, and will broadcast NASA, Facebook Live, Ustream, YouTube and the Agency's website. NASA TV station also broadcasts a preview program from the beginning 11:15 EST.
OSIRIS-REx was launched September 2016 and slowly approached Benna. Spacecraft spends almost a year searching for an asteroid with five scientific instruments to select a site that is safe and scientifically interesting for sample collection. OSIRIS-REx returns the sample on Earth in September 2023.
