Christmas jam Warren Haynes celebrates this 30th anniversary this weekend, with artists such as Eric Church, Gov't Mule, Jim James, Grace Potter, and more bringing soul to Asheville's US mobile center. Also in the account is Dave Grohl, who unleashes his 23-minute prog-rock instrumental Play with the help of some special guests.
These include Alain Johannes from Them Crooked Vultures, Jane Addiction Chris Guy, Foo Fighters Drew Hester, Producer Greg Kurstin, and Jason Falkner and Barrett Jones. See what they will play in the tweet below.
Grohl published a documentary about the creation Play this summer. "The whole song was played by Grohl, each time on another instrument, living for 23 minutes," said the press release accompanying the document. "Beginning with recording the whole track of the drum purely out of memory, without musical sheets or guiding tracks, followed by a guitar, then bass, then keyboards and so on … Grohl commissioned the recording of one man who was forced to start from the very beginning of a 23 minute song at any time the smallest mistake was made, or if Grohl felt it better to take it.
