Faculty members and students at Oakland University in Detroit suburb receive training on how to use hockey pucks to potentially suppress shooters.
WDIV-TV reports that the American Association of University Professors divides its five to 800 members.
Mark Gordon, the head of the university police, says that in order to fight effectively, people in the camp must be ready to throw heavy objects that cause distraction. Gordon says the pucks can be comfortably carried in suitcases or backpacks.
The Oakland University College also collaborates with student groups to distribute a further 1,700 pucks to students.
The 2007 fireworks at Virginia Tech inspired the University of Oakland to help people in the camp prepare for the possible gun-related violence and defend themselves, said Gordon to the media. A 23-year-old student was shooting at Virginia Tech, which left 32 people and a dead shooter.
