Chilean expert denies myths and prejudices about artificial intelligence Technology

It is perhaps one of the most unknown areas of science mostly. The closest approach to the subject was science fiction films, where many times Artificial Intelligence (AI) escapes planned control and attempts against humanity.

This is perhaps one of the greatest prejudices that exists about artificial intelligence. But what is the truth in all these myths?

John Atkinson He has an Artificial Intelligence Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh who has spent much of his life studying this subject.

Atkinson has always wanted to learn more about this area, and therefore destroyed and confirmed some myths created in collective imagination.

Is the use of artificial intelligence in companies, which means reducing job numbers?

AI realism will automate tasks that are less common, so they can limit "traditional" tasks. However, this is not typical of AI, because the incorporation of conventional information technology has had the same impact a few years ago.

For example, procedures that the customer should personally make at the branch, now in electronic form from a mobile phone or from your home.

Could the artificial intelligence in the future tempt people?

Reality Although it is out of reach at the uniquely functional level of the organization. However, at international strategic level, it could eventually appear in some areas.

For example, the defense industry already has autonomous weapons, which, of course, if not controlled, could affect not only the community but also humanity. Therefore, several international organizations advocate and require that the use of AI in the defense is forbidden.

Are artificial intelligence used for transport such as planes or buses signifying greater accident risks than one driven by men?

Myth The use of AI for autonomous driving of different types of vehicles is long-lasting and in general there are many advantages over the risks.

For example, for commercial aircraft, years have been used by "autopilot" (GPS-guided). Achieving autonomy in both flight and take-off / landing is just a matter of time.

Also, when the machine is "tired", it has information about the perception that a person does not have, can be "trained" with absolute respect for the law, in advance to predict the situation on the route.

At some point, artificial intelligence could create feelings in robots?

Reality There are AI models that not only allow machines to understand their emotions, but also their intentions and beliefs about the "world" they perceive.

On the other hand, the involvement of emotions and beliefs is essential for practical interaction with people and their acceptance. For example, depending on the intentions, emotions and beliefs of the machine, the commercial demand of the customer can be satisfied, very or differently and roughly.

Is there a possibility in a future artificial intelligence to develop a chip that will allow you to store memories you choose from memory (as the Black Mirror chapter shows)?

Reality There has been significant progress in memory-related aspects both in understanding where it is located and in electrochemical information that is part of our neuronal circuit.

Removal of this information and its transfer to some "physical" devices is not only feasible, but there are organizations that offer medium-term, this kind of "services" even for the "death" of a person, consciousness as memory could be transferred to an "avatar" represents post mortem.

Artificial intelligence is full of a world of strangeness and elements unknown to many.

This issue, like the others, like Cybersecurity, Environment and Innovation, is a matter for various national and international experts to meet for public innovations, which will be held at the Naval Polytechnic Academy (APOLINAV) in Valparaíso.

Workshops and interviews are free to all interested public. You can specify more information about schedule and conferences in this link.
