Mangos and green bananas could help prevent colon cancer – Health – Life

According to scientists at the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico, Mangos and Green Bananas have properties that help prevent colon cancer.

According to a study conducted at the Center for the Development of Biotic Products, it was found that these fruits are a source of resistant starch and function as dietary fiber. Luis Arturo Bello Pérez, who led the investigation, He explained that starch is the major polysaccharide that, when completely dissolved by boiling, is hydrolysed by digestive enzymes to glucose, which increases the blood's content of this saccharide.

The scientist explained that there is a wide range of cereals, especially corn, wheat, rice and some roots and tubers such as potatoes, cassava, sweet potatoes and taro from which the starches used in the food industry are extracted.

However, after the study It was found that mango and banana, which are not fully mature, contain more resistant starch. He said that at this stage starch has a physiological benefit as a regulator of blood cholesterol and as a contribution to the calories needed for diabetics without exceeding blood glucose.

However The main quality is that it becomes the protector of cells that line the colon and when it reaches the colon directly it is fermented by a microbiota that produces butyrate, a short chain fatty acid. Butyrate has anti-inflammatory properties while providing sufficient energy for the cells that line the colon, so that the greater the presence of this fatty acid has a better protective effect, especially in the organ inflammation processes, the researcher continued.

According to health authorities, about 15,000 cases of this type of cancer are diagnosed each year in Mexico and more than 6,500 patients who have lost their lives. The researcher said it was important to evaluate the methods of processing, storing, and producing these fruits in order to have higher quality at sensory, nutritional and functional levels.

Derived from the outcome of their investigation, Bello Pérez suggested granting the quality of nutraceuticals (food products with nutritional and functional properties positive for the organism) resistant starch. This is because eating it has beneficial health effects, in addition, it can greatly help in preventing obesity and overweight, which are the source of serious global health problems such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
