The European Antibiotic Day initiative is organized by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and supported by the World Health Organization. It is an initiative aimed at both lay and professional public and aims to raise awareness of the correct use of antibiotics, as well as the threats posed by bacteria resistant to many antibiotic groups. Antibiotic resistance in many cases jeopardizes public health, as several tens of thousands of Europeans die annually as a result of infections with resistant bacterial strains.
"Antibiotics play a very important role in the treatment of infectious diseases, unfortunately antibiotic resistance (resistance) of bacteria or even their ability to survive in the presence of antibiotics has become an alarming problem of international importance in recent years. to use antibiotics very responsibly, and it is precisely this issue that highlights the European Antibiotic Day, which is already world-wide, "says the primary health care professional of Prostějov microbiology OLM Ivana Kohnová.
"It is very important to constantly remind not only the general public but also healthcare professionals the need for a responsible approach to antibiotics, because by proper use of antibiotics we can prevent the proliferation of dangerous resistant strains and help to maintain effective drugs for future generations. it is unnecessary, the bacterial agents of the infections are gradually becoming resistant to them and the antibiotics become ineffective, "says Ivana Kohn, MD, with the fact that in practice it is often the case that patients require antibiotics without their diagnosis. cases of direct and open cooperation between a doctor and a patient are needed, as well as raising awareness of all risks that are associated with the overuse of antibiotics, "concludes Kohnová, adding that, in connection with the European antibiotic day m in the Central Moravian Hospital hospitals will be available to all those who are interested in antibiotics.
