ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – An Ethiopian official has revealed that his country has completed preparations to release a double murder suspect to the US on either Monday or Tuesday.
The transition to the 25-year-old Yohann Nesibu, a nation of ethnic ethnicity from Ethiopia, came after the Attorney General decided to make a decision in recent days.
"The suspect is accused of killing two other people who were also in Virginia in 2016, who were also born in Ethiopia," Zinabu Tunu, Attorney General spokesman for Ethiopia, said on Monday. "The request for its release came to the US Department of Criminal Justice. The Attorney General decided to release the suspect after evaluating several of the evidence submitted to him from the division. "
The suspect now in custody in Ethiopia is also suspected of misusing two weapons.
But friends and family members of the suspect raised issues about extradition because Ethiopia and the US have no extradition agreement.
“First, the extradition process must go through a court to check its legality before the suspect is handed over to the US authorities. Second, there is no agreement on extradition between the two countries, which makes it possible, ”said Simeneh Kiros, a suspect attorney.
The suspect's parents also said that their son was arrested two months ago by the Ethiopian police after they had arrested the suspect's father for six days.
"We want our son to be judged in Ethiopia," Father Nesibu Bezabih said. “Yohannes could face the death penalty in the US. He should also not be sent to a country with which Ethiopia has no extradition agreement. There is also the question of sovereignty, which should be considered here. "
The Attorney General spokesman said his office has the authority and duty that the law gives him to extradite criminal suspects.
"His release also took into account his nationality because he is a US citizen. We also received a commitment from the US authorities to respect the rights of suspects, ”he said.
