The West region of Ethiopia loves more than 80 armed insurgents – Xinhua

ADDIS ABABA, November 7 (Xinhua) – The western province of Benishangul Gumuz in Ethiopia on Wednesday announced the release of about 83 young people arrested in illegal military training.

The Regional Police Commission said 11 suspects arrested for conducting illegal training of local youth would not be forgiven because they pose a major threat to peace and stability in the region, according to the Ethiopian agency.

Most of the youth who received illegal military training in bushland near the capital of Assosa, according to the regional police commission, aged between 13 and 26.

Individuals who trained recruited local villagers and eventually trained them to kill civilians and create confusion in the region.

Illegal training of armed insurgents is the latest development amid a recent wave of violence, mainly due to ethnic differences, in cities across the region.

Last month, local authorities said that about a dozen people were killed in Assos and around. The recent increase in fatal ethnic disputes has often occurred among local residents and other ethnic groups in the region.

The state, located in Western Ethiopia along the border with Sudan, hosts the largest development project of the country, a major Ethiopian Renaissance dam, under construction on the Blue Nile.
