Barcelona after the first matches in La Liga lost more than two years when Real Betis pulled a staggering victory 4-3, although Lionel Messi twice won the wounds.
Barca last held a league defeat at Camp Nou against Alavos in September 2016, but after 42 failed games, their run on Sunday ended with a brilliant counterattack display from Betis.
Three hours later, Real Madrid made a final touch of a 4-2 victory in Celta Vigo, which would result in Santiago Solari prolonging his functional training.
The real now sent four consecutive victories since Solari was temporarily arrested while the gap behind Barca was reduced to four points.
"He did a great job," Madrid Club Director Emilio Butragueno said. "We are very happy with how things happened."
For his future, Solari said: "We will see, I'm not planning too far, but it's my day yesterday." Barcock's shock defeat started despite a return to Messi, whose two goals, one of the penalty points and the other deeply injured, more than consolation.
"We will not feel that Betis was a better team," said coach Ernesto Valverde.
"I do not want to take credit from my opponent, but we could fight them better." It was the first time Messi had struck twice and Barcelona was lost, but they stayed at the top of the table, even though three clubs rounded just one point.
Atletico Madrid, facing the Wanda Metropolitano after an international break, led Sevilla and Alaves.
Alaves defeated Huescu 2-1 earlier on Sunday, while Sevilla won the same score on the home of Espanyol, Wissam Ben Yedder sold the winner in the 89th minute.
"The top of the table is fine, I will not deny it," Valverde said.
"It should also help us to realize that it is not easy to win."
Betis's reward for defeating Barca is to climb 12th. The side of Quique Setien may have recovered in a luxurious and attacking football that won sixth place in the last semester, but remains in full swing as one of Spain's heaviest opponents.
"In any case, we were a brave team," said former Spanish international Joaquin. "Camp Nou winning requires concentration and it does everything very well We played a great game."
– faster, sharper and hungrier –
Betis looked faster, sharper and hungrier, while the Barcelona center was repeatedly carved for a pause.
It took five passes for an opening man, the last one for William Carvalo, who released Junior Firpo to the left. Sergi Roberto struck and pulled into the net.
Barca had a chance, but Betis soon fired ahead, with the Junior Cross avoiding all except Giovanni Lo Celso on the other side. His cute cut was selected by Joaquin, who was stabbed in Betis's second.
Arturo Vidal replaced crazy Artura Melo in the halftime and 68 minutes Barca pulled one back, Jordi Alba captured Cristian Tello and Messi converted the penalty to the eighth league goal of the season.
However, the revival stopped three minutes later when Marc-Andre ter Stegen let Lo Celso shoot through his fingers and set off in a distant corner by 3-1.
The boat was not finished yet. Two alternates for one second, Munir El Haddadi lying on Vidal, but when he started to return, he was stopped.
First, Ivan Rakitic was seconded, the second yellow card for the late call to Lo Celso, and then Sergio Canales knocked Betis' fourth from the Junior Cross. Messi added his second in injury, but there was no late drama.
The victory in Madrid was much easier when Karim Benzema opened the scoring, a noisy touch and turned the corner to a sharp angle.
Benzema fired after Gustavo Cabral set off, before Hugo Mallo's sweet volleyball gave Celta hope. Sergio Ramos, however, was fired in a later punishment, Cabral was sent to the second yellow card and Dani Ceballos surrounded the points with an excellent long range attack. Brais Mendez recorded in Celtic in the second round injury.
The only action for Solari was a blast of injuries seen by all Casemiro, Sergio Reguilon and Nacho. Gareth Bale also hit the left ankle in the first half, but was able to continue.
