A service that offers tests to women who can inherit a gene that leaves them with a higher risk of breast cancer was suspended monthly at St James Hospital in Dublin.
Actress Angelina Jolie, who had such a test, had double mastectomy in recent years to prevent breast cancer.
A hospital spokesman said that since April, a risky family service has been interrupted due to the requirements for a breast X-ray device for symptomatic patients.
She says that funding has recently been received to replace one mammography machine and buy a third one, which is likely to be available early next year. This will help alleviate the lag of patients waiting for mammography.
