Genetic mutation blocking and cancer treatment: Dong-A Science

Genes are often thought to be determined from birth, but they also depend on lifestyle and the environment. This is called "acquired gene expression mutation," but has recently been identified as a cause of serious illness.

Professor Kim Jeong-seon and Professor Lee Young-chul of Chonnam National University said 8th that they found out how to control the mutation of gene expression obtained by controlling the enzyme (protein) in the human body.

Scientists looked at the "histone deacetylase" in the body. It participates in various biological activities such as cancer cell death, angiogenesis and tumor metastasis, differentiation and immune cell inhibition, muscle differentiation and myocardial production. Scientists are using it to develop a new concept of cancer drugs. However, the roles are so diverse that if the function is uninterruptedly interrupted, toxicity occurs in the gastrointestinal system, blood cells, myocardium and nerve cells.

Histone deacetylase is known as histone deacetylase type 2 (type 2 enzyme) that is associated with anticancer effect. Researchers found a protein called "SMRT" that helped activate type 2 enzyme and revealed its structure. We also found a specific structure in which SMRT protein selectively binds to type II enzymes.

Scientists hope that if further research is done, they will be able to develop drugs that selectively block type 2 enzymes. Professor Kim said, "Future studies are expected to develop new drugs that minimize side effects and increase cancer cell death and inhibit angiogenesis tumors. "

The research results were also presented in the October 13 issue of the International Journal of Nucleic Acids, an international journal in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology.
