ALOR SETAR: The meeting of the Kedah State Assembly was yesterday informed that the State Assembly Guar Chempedak Datuk Dr. Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail has left Umno and is now an independent representative of the people.

The announcement was made by the chairman of the State Assembly, Datuk Ahmad Kassim, as soon as the meeting was held before the oral question.

"I was informed about it through a letter I received yesterday (Sunday) … so his seats in the House will be changed," he said.

62-year-old Ku Abdul Rahman, who is from nearby Yan, won general election in May and defeated PAS Musoddak Ahmad.

Since 2008, he has been represented by Barisan Nasional (BN) and has been appointed state exile from 2013 to 2018.

He holds a postgraduate degree in rubber science from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, and from 1997 to 2001 he served as the political secretary of the former Minister of Defense, Datuk Seri Syed, Hamid Albar.
