British scientists argue for a red meat tax

British scientists associating Oxford University are demanding a red meat tax. The introduction of such a tax could be beneficial to health care in many countries, he said. Scientists estimate that around 2.4 million deaths worldwide will be caused by red meat consumption by 2020. In addition, it provides public health costs of $ 285 billion. In collaboration with research centers in the United States and the United Kingdom, they tried to achieve an optimal red meat tax in 149 countries to cover as much as possible the associated healthcare costs. Worldwide, the required average tax rates reach 16% for red meat and 20% for western countries. For processed meat products the tax rate should be much higher. The optimal red meat tax rate would scare around the world at about $ 172 billion to cover 70 percent of the damage that the consumption of meat products costs to society.

In their study, scientists focused primarily on the implications for public health, but also indirectly mentioned effects on CO2 emissions in their publication. The tax would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100 million tonnes, mainly due to lower beef consumption.
