A small picture of the French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir was stolen from a large auction house in central Vienna, local police said on Wednesday and searched for three suspects.

The artwork depicting the coastal landscape should go under the hammer Wednesday, but disappeared from Monday afternoon, according to the same source. Its value is estimated at between EUR 120 000 and EUR 160 000.

Police issued photos taken by a surveillance camera, in which three men came to the Dorotheum auction house around 5:15 pm (4:15 PM GMT). Upon returning to the painting on the second floor, they left the premises alone.

"They were probably professionals," said Patrick Maierhofer, a spokesman for the Vienna police. This image, named "Bay, Sea, Green Cliffs", measures 40 x 27 centimeters and dates back to 1895. (AFP / NXP)
