Italian police seized more than two tons of cocaine worth half a billion euros in the port of Genoa. It's the largest amount of cocaine detained in Italy over the last 25 years. The drugs were hidden in the sacks on board a ship that sailed from Colombia.
Drugs were hidden in about 60 bags on a ship from Colombia, which was on its way to Barcelona. An unauthorized shipment was discovered last week, police said today. The Spaniard was arrested in the attack.
The police also said the drugs are owned by several smuggling organizations working with an armed forces clan (El Clan del Golfo), which produces about 70 percent of cocaine production in Colombia.
On Wednesday, the police announced 650 kilos of cocaine worth 130 million euros in the port of Livorno in mid-January. The drugs were hidden in a supply of coffee beans aboard a ship from Central America, focusing on Barcelona.
