Aidshilfe Steiermark is a tour under the motto "I Want to Know!" through the Weiz district.
In 2017 there were 58 people in Styria who were first diagnosed with HIV infection. This represents an increase of 26 percent compared to 2016. To warn of this unpleasant development and raise awareness of HIV and AIDS, Aidshilfe Styria travels to the Weiz district.
High cost of therapy
40 percent of diagnoses are very late. This means that those who have been affected for many years carry the virus, putting their own health burden and possibly endangering others through negligence. Due to the further development of medical treatment options, today's infected people can lead an almost normal life, but there is still a major problem that HIV-infected or AIDS patients will be infected in our society, explains Manfred Rupp, head of Aidshilfe Steiermark. In addition, the average cost of care for HIV-infected people over the lifetime would be between 400,000 and 500,000 euros.
District Tour Weiz
Until World AIDS Day, December 1, Aidshilfe in Styria, Weiz, wants to make a tour "I Want To Know!" raise awareness and inform people through lectures, free and anonymous tests, and poster campaign and red ribbon in public buildings.
During the lecture "Aid, is this something different for us?" will be discussed on November 15 in Paracelsusapotheke Weiz and on 27 November at Kulturkeller Gleisdorf on this subject. Health counselor Christopher Drexler stresses that the disease should not be forgotten: "Due to treatment options, HIV infection is now treatable, but we must not play this disease."
In Graz, you can try anonymously and free of charge at Aidshilfe Steiermark. Test results are obtained over three to five days. The quick test gives the result in half an hour. 80 percent of experienced people are currently from Graz and surrounding areas and a tour of the districts that want to facilitate access to the HIV test for people there. "I hope the sightseeing will raise awareness of this important issue and reduce exposure to people affected by the infection," says Rupp.
