They are on the street, they are on the sidewalks, and despite the fact that Austin's footpaths are not allowed, the waterless electric scooters have also found home.
But next month, the pilot program will allow both scooters and electric motorcycles to run on several paths maintained by parks and recreation.
The program will start in December and will run for approximately nine months until autumn 2019.
"The strategic direction of Austin includes a mobility goal that brings us wherever we want to get there safely and cost-effectively." Electric bicycles and scooters are an alternative mode of transport that, if used properly, can serve to support this goal, "said Kimberly McNeeley, acting director for parks and recreation.
According to the note, electric stamps and scooters will be permitted on routes:
The northern walnut route
Southern Walnut Trail
Ann and Roy Butler Trail (electric bikes only)
Barton Creek Greenbelt and other natural areas or nature reserves will stay out of the border.
"PARD realizes that some routes, including routes through neighboring parks with limited connectivity, routes that are close to recreational facilities such as playgrounds and natural paths such as green strips and nature reserves have been designed and built only with regard to recreational users, and at the moment these lines do not have the capacity, surface or width to safely mount motorized electric bikes or scooters, "reads the memorandum.
Parks and recreational data show that more than 1,600 snowboard scooters are already in the streets of Austin, and companies including Lime and Bird plan will bring thousands more to the city.
Local officials hope the route program will help leaders find out what changes to be made in the city code to keep pedestrians and trouble-free scooters or cyclists safe.
