DHHS confirms the AFM case in Nebraska

The State Department of Health confirmed the first case of acute cold myelitis on Sunday in Nebraska.

A child with the AFM was at the Sarpy / Cass Health Institute, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. The child was hospitalized and later released.

This case was separate from the suspicious case in Douglas County. The CDC was unable to confirm this case as an AFM.

But DHHS has revealed that the authorities are testing another suspect case in the Sarpy / Cass Department of Health at the CDC.

"The AFM is a rare but serious condition that affects most children, and we've been watching cases in Nebraska for four years," Dr. Tom Safranek, a national epidemiologist for DHHS. "There is still much information about the AFM and more studies are needed. National and local health departments nationwide are working with federal partners to investigate cases and possible causes."
