The sensitive nose of the drug smoky dog has led to what federal officials say is the biggest bout in the history of fentanyl in the US, a synthetic opioid blamed most of the overdose deaths.
Customs and Border Protection Officials on Thursday said they had found that 254 kilograms of drug was hidden in the floor of a truck with cucumbers. They also found 395 pounds of methamphetamine.
CBP valued $ 3.5 million for fentanyl and $ 1.1 million for methamphetamine.
The seizure was twice as large as the apparent previous record of £ 118, which was found in a truck stopped by state soldiers in Nebraska in 2017.
In the latter case, the tractor trailer was stopped on Saturday and attempted to enter the US across the border crossing in Nogales, Arizona.
The authorities said he was being led by a 26-year-old man who had been arrested and charged with holding drugs with the intention of dividing them. His identity and nationality were not immediately available.
Michael Humphries, director of Nogales Area, praised his staff for a record arrest.
"Their attention to the small details that are necessary for these types of seizures is unbelievable."
The Disease Control Center stated that fentanyl is responsible for more than 28,400 overdose deaths in 2017, the last year for which data are available.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the drug is 100 times stronger than morphine.
"Many users think they are buying heroin and actually do not know they are buying fentanyl – which often leads to overdose deaths."
Most of the illegally manufactured fentanyl comes from Mexico.
